Gwen Martin, Managing Director & Director of Research
Gwen Martin is Managing Director & Director of Research for the Center for Women's Business Research. She has nearly twenty years experience in research related to education, entrepreneurship, small business, and economic development.

Prior to joining the Center, Martin was with the University of Missouri, where she most recently was Director of Community Enterprise & Entrepreneurial Development and previously the Director of Business Research & Information Development Group. Before moving to the university, Martin was Manager of Research & Evaluation for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, where her research focused on starting and growing businesses, women and minority-owned businesses, specific growth issues, adult education, and youth development. Her early career includes owning a small business and learning first-hand the challenges and opportunities of a woman-owned business.

Martin's research findings have been instrumental in program, product, and service creation and enhancement for small business owners and entrepreneurs. Her work has been funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, Economic Development Administration, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, InvestMidwest Venture Capital Forum, Kellogg Foundation, Missouri State Department of Agriculture, National Science Foundation, National Women's Business Council, Partnership for Children, Women's Bureau and others. Her research includes over 100 studies and she is a frequent presenter at local, regional, and national conferences.

In 2003, Martin received the SBA Regional Research Advocate of the Year award. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Kansas, with special emphasis in gender and social inequality, a master's in sociology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a bachelor's in human relations and organizational behavior from the University of San Francisco.
